Born in 551 B.C. in the now Chinese province of Shandong, Confucius had a difficult childhood. Although his father belonged to the nobility and was renowned as a warrior, the family had struck hard times and lived in poverty. When Confucius was only three years old, his father died. In order to support his family, Confucius had to take a job as a hired servant when he was still very young. Despite his family’s poverty, however, he still managed to get an education, which started him on the path toward a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
